HONOR ROLL
“Try the shrimp,” suggested Dennis Hopper, giving pointers on how to end-rush the gridiron crunch around the White House buffet table. “I’ve had five.”
Bill and Hillary Clinton opened their doors recently to meet and greet Jack Lemmon, Benny Carter, Edward Albee, Maria Tallchief and Johnny Cash — recipients of this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, which recognize lifetime achievement in the performing arts. The visiting stars and a slew of White House aides were kept hopping during two nonstop days leading up to the gala tribute performance at the Kennedy Center.
Earlier that day, the crowd was more manageable at George Stevens’ traditional pre-gala brunch at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Donna Shalala spent time patrolling the hotel lobby while she waited for her car to arrive.
“My driver must have gone to the car wash,” she said.
Following the Kennedy Center gala performance the next day, Kris Kristofferson and his wife seemed a little uncomfortable in their formal attire at a State Department dinner hosted by outgoing Secretary of State Warren Christopher.
“My whole tuxedo seems to be falling apart,” said the actor/singer, checking the tension in his waistband while his wife rescued an errant button from the floor.
