It has been four years since Charlize Theron appeared as the primary lead in a movie. Since then, she's been doing recurring and short roles, and treated as a B-lister ... but not for long.

Charlize's parents, Charles Theron and Gerda Maritz, were road construction workers in the South African town of Benoni.

On the eventful night of June 21st 1991, they endured a pivotal moment, one which transformed their entire existence.

Theron, who was just 15 at the time, recalled this horrific incident in an NPR interview:

"My father [Charles Theron] was so drunk that he shouldn’t have been able to walk when he came into the house with a gun. My mom and I were in my bedroom leaning against the door because he was trying to push through the door.

"So both of us were leaning against the door from the inside to have him not be able to push through. He took a step back and just shot through the door three times."

In a harrowing act of self-defense, Gerda, Charlize's mother, shot and killed her father.

For much of her early career, Theron shielded her mother, stating her father had died in a car accident.

In 2006, the actress broke her silence and disclosed the truth, after more than a decade in Hollywood.

In a candid interview with Town & Country Magazine in November, Charlize was asked if the experience prompted her fight against gender-based violence, and she explained:

"I would say this: It’s a simple correlation to make ... But I think it’s way more complicated than having just one night of trauma in your life.

"With or without that, gender-based violence is so in your face in South Africa and globally. It’s hard to not be aware of these things just purely by being a woman."

This massive trauma occurred before Theron had even turned 16, but Charlize is resilient.

So resilient, in fact, that one year after the incident, Charlize (who had moved to Italy with her mother after the tragedy) attended an Italian beauty contest.

The pageant's judges were captivated by her beauty, awarding her a medal and a year-long modeling contract:

In 1994, Charlize Theron was 19, and with only $300 to her name, she moved to the land of opportunity – America – to try her hand at becoming an actress.

The $300 ($640.90 in 2024 dollars) didn't go far, and she had to steal bread baskets to survive.

After that, one further incident changed her life for good — Charlize visited a bank to cash a few checks, and a teller refused to cash a check sent by her mother to cover her rent.

Theron argued and pleaded with the teller, inadvertently causing a scene in the bank, a story she later told to Oprah:

If I didn't cash that check, I wouldn't have had a place to sleep that night.

I said to the teller, 'You don't understand — please!' I was begging and pleading, and a gentleman came over and tried to help.

Fortunately, the person behind her in line was talent agent John Crosby; Crosby resolved the issue, cashed the check personally, and discovered her in the process.

Speaking to Oprah, Theron said of her chance encounter with Crosby:

"There's nothing more powerful than a vulnerable woman. I knew my power. What I didn't know is that I was auditioning for a guy who would end up being my manager.

"On the way out, the man who'd helped gave me his card. [He was John Crosby, who represented John Hurt and Rene Russo.] He said, 'If you're interested, I'll represent you.'"

After a year of seeking out roles and attending auditions, Charlize finally landed an uncredited role in Children Of The Corn III: Urban Harvest.

Talent is often like a river, but Charlize Theron's is more like the ocean — no barrier can stop her.

After several years of struggling, Theron finally got her breakthrough opportunity, alongside Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves in the 1997 film The Devil’s Advocate.

This was a pivotal moment in her acting career, and she handled it brilliantly, going on to choose and star in several major movies, like The Cider House Rules, Men Of Honor, and Sweet November.

In 2003, she won back-to-back roles which changed her life, and marked her as one of the greatest actresses of her era.

Her A-list acting era began with the part of Stella Bridger in The Italian Job, which was a commercial success worldwide.

While audiences and critics alike were lavishing praise upon her for The Italian Job, her focus was elsewhere, as she prepared for the finest performance of her life: portraying Aileen Wuornos in Monster:

Charlize had certainly impressed audiences before, but Monster left them in awe of her transformation as the troubled Wuornos, a sex worker turned serial killer.

Award shows showered her with honors; she won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and several other prestigious critics' awards. Critics around the world lauded her performance.

One of the best, most notable, and notoriously hard-to-impress critics, the late Roger Ebert, described her portrayal in simple but unambiguous terms:

One of the greatest performances in the history of cinema.

Two years later, Charlize Theron earned another Oscar nomination for her unforgettable role as Josey Almes in North Country, a fictionalized account of the first-ever major successful sexual harassment case in 1984.

Charlize Theron's career was in full swing. She continued working in still-discussed films like Hancock, The Burning Plain, and a short role in The Road.

Then, in 2009, she stepped away from acting to take a two-year hiatus.

Charlize Theron's Career Roller Coaster

Hollywood and the film industry are truly merciless — a scant two years out of a near-constant spotlight can cause audiences (and producers) to forget even the best actors.

In this fast-paced world, Charlize Theron had to reboot her career, starring in the 2011 film Young Adult.

After that "comeback project," she continued re-asserting her talent, appearing in Prometheus and Snow White And The Huntsman.

In 2012, after the adoption of her daughter Jackson Theron, she vanished for another two years — and though her second hiatus was not a bad thing, it halted her career momentum.

But Charlize's aura never truly fades; she soon bounced back with acclaimed movies, including A Million Ways To Die In The West and Dark Places.

However, it was her role in Mad Max: Fury Road (as Imperator Furiosa) that reminded the world (again) of her reign as an everlasting queen in Hollywood, and it seemed Theron would soon elevate her career to its previous heights.

But two unexpected, back-to-back flops – The Huntsman: Winter's War and The Last Face – stalled the Oscar-winner's upward trajectory, giving pause to producers and directors and creating negative speculation about her future in film.

Theron had a befitting reply, though, producing her own mega-hit movie, Atomic Blonde, which earned $100 million at the box office against a $30 million budget.

After yet another Oscar-nominated role in 2019's Bombshell (and appearing in Netflix's The Old Guard in 2020), Theron didn't land a leading role for four years:

By now, it seems that whenever her career falters, she comes back with a blockbuster.

And her exciting upcoming projects suggest that another strong comeback is on the horizon for the legendary Charlize Theron.

So what if casting agents aren't offering her roles?

Charlize produces her own movies, and remains an audience favorite, and she is no longer at the mercy of directors, producers, or casting agents.

Theron is currently producing an impressive five projects right now: The Old Guard 2, Two Eyes Staring, Jane, Two For The Money, and Atomic Blonde 2.

What's more, Charlize is set to star as the main character in three of those movies, including sequels to her popular films Atomic Blonde and The Old Guard.

In Two For The Money, she will appear alongside former James Bond actor Daniel Craig.

In other words, Charlize Theron's net worth, estimated at an already mammoth $200 million, will likely increase significantly.

For almost three decades, Charlize has been a staple in the industry, and she has earned a major chunk of her fortune through her 71 acting projects to date.

After back-to-back hits in 2003, Charlize earned millions from every movie project to which she was attached; she landed her first (gigantic) $10 million paycheck for 2006's Æon Flux.

Despite several lulls in her career, Theron never lost sight of her goals, as she is the owner of the renowned Denver & Delilah production company, which produced movies like Monster, Long Shot, Tully, Murder Mystery, and Atomic Blonde.

Recently, she partnered up with esteemed producer Dawn Olmstead to create a new entertainment company.

As such, she's en route to becoming a powerhouse in the entertainment business once again, inviting acclaim from both sides of the camera lens.

Due to top-tier film salaries, lucrative endorsement deals, and production profits, Charlize has built a net worth of $200 million, and her latest production ventures are poised to add an estimated $50 million to her fortune.
