Bill Burleigh Obituary, The Big Sur International Marathon Mourns The Loss Of Beloved Founder – Death – The world obits

Bill Burleigh Obituary, Death – Carmel, CA The Big Sur International Marathon (BSIM) and the non-profit Big Sur Marathon Foundation (BSMF) mourn the peaceful death of Bill Burleigh, BSIM’s founder, on December 5, 2023, just shy of his 89th birthday. Bill founded and developed the Big Sur International Marathon, which was named California’s Best Marathon in 2023 and has become a global marathon milestone since 1986. Born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1934, Bill Burleigh’s legacy goes beyond marathons.

Bill graduated cum laude from the University of Colorado, Boulder and Boalt Law School at UC Berkeley after serving as a decorated Marine Corps sergeant. For 22 years, he was Carmel’s city attorney and Monterey County judge. On his 50th birthday, Bill ran his first marathon after switching from wingtips to running shoes. Running motivated him to start the Big Sur River Run in 1980.  However, a road sign reading “Big Sur – 26 miles” inspired the Big Sur International Marathon. Bill persevered to realize his marathon vision despite many obstacles.

He persevered for two years to obtain permits and permissions for the marathon’s first run. Bill and the BSIM “Blue Jackets” Events Committee organized the first Big Sur International Marathon on April 29, 1986, setting a standard for a unique, captivating experience along Highway 1. BSMF Governance Board member Dr. Hugo Ferlio said, “Bill made the marathon whimsical, fun, and ever-improving with music, mile markers, and surprises.” Bill showed his love for Big Sur beyond the race.

He made sure the event’s proceeds supported vital local services, reflecting his deep commitment to community empowerment and upliftment. “Bill Burleigh’s extraordinary vision and dedication to the Big Sur International Marathon have touched thousands of lives globally and locally,” said the BSMF. “We mourn Bill’s death but are grateful to continue his remarkable legacy.” Due to his vision, leadership, and dedication to community empowerment, Bill Burleigh’s legacy on the marathon community and Big Sur will last.
